Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Air Traffic Controller?
It may seem obvious to many of you-but I get this question all the time! Here is a quick run-down of ATC.

Air traffic controllers safely direct aircraft. They work in airport control towers, as well as en route control centers and terminal radar approaches. Tower Controllers give pilots taxiing and take off instructions, air traffic clearances, and advice based on their own observations and experience, provide separation between landing and departing aircraft, transfer control of aircraft to the terminal radar approach controllers, and receive control of aircraft on flights coming into airspace. Terminal Radar Approach Controllers provide radar atc services to all arriving and departing aircraft. Enroute Center Controllers normally direct the bulk of the flight. Center controllers use radar or manual procedures to keep track of planes at any given time. The typical center has responsibility for more than 100,000 square miles of airspace generally extending over a number of states.

How do I get hired as an Air Traffic Controller?
That depends on where you want to work. The FAA hires:
PATCO Controllers - members of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization that were fired by Reagan in the 1981 strike. As per Clinton, fired PATCO controllers are now eligible to be rehired.
DOD controllers - military controllers or civilian controllers working at military facilities.
REHIRED Controllers - controller who once worked with the F.A.A., then spent time away and are now returning i.e. "rehired."
CTI's - CTI (Collegiate Training Initiative), controllers that have attended an FAA approved college that has an ATC education program.

Many controllers are also hired as CONTRACT Controllers - these are controllers that work with one of the privatized ATC services at low level activity ATC Towers. To be hired as a contract controller you must simply find out when they are hiring and apply by submitting your resume. Contractor jobs are listed in our newsletter when they are available.

What are the maximum age requirements?
You must be under the age of 31 prior to entering duty with the FAA as an ATC Specialist, however many waivers and exceptions are available. Private employers do not have such strict age requirements and will accept applicants over the age of 31. You can find out about private sector ATC jobs in the ATC Alert.
